South Aisle

South aisle South ailse South aisle

Down this aisle are many beautiful stained glass windows which depict some well-known parables with each pair describing scenes from different parts of each story. To see all these windows, more detailed pictures and information about them look at the page South Aisle Stained Glass Windows.

Storage cupboards were fitted down the length of the south aisle in the early millennium. At the west end of the south aisle there are display and notice boards and a bookstall display case. South Aisle Carvings and Plaques are mounted on the wall. The Book of Remembrance is kept in a glass topped table cabinet at the east end. In it are recorded the names of parishioners who have died arranged in twelve sections corresponding to the months of the year. Entries are made according to the dates of death, and a page for the current month is always left open so that those whose names are on that page may be remembered in this way.

The church group, St James's Players, play for the All Age Services in the east end of the south aisle and the clavinova and some music stands are kept here. The portable altar is also stored here when not in use. An information table stands in the south aisle.

There are two beautifully worked opus sectile panels, each surrounded by a marble border, at the east end of the south aisle. Opus sectile is a form of decoration similar in concept to mosaic work. One panel is of Mother & Child, in memory of Mrs Isdell and is inscribed: "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Henrietta Eliza wife of Capt Charles Isdell. Born 3rd July 1848 at rest 29th July 1922. Also their dearly beloved only son Charles Henry Wynn entered into his rest at Nairobi British East Africa 11th May 1917, aged 43. So He bringeth them into the Haven where they would be." The other is of St Michael, in memory of Captain Isdell and is inscribed: "To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Charles Wynn Isdell, Captain the late 44th East Sussex Regt. He served in the Crimea, was a Masonic Knight Templar of the order of St John of Jerusalem, and for many years Churchwarden of this church. Only son of Lieut. C Wynn Isdell R.N. Born 4th April 1838. Entered into his rest 28th July 1905. This tablet is erected by his wife, children and relatives. Be then faithful unto death & I will give thee a crown of life." See below for pictures and detailed information.
