Service music through the years

The first available records originate from the 1880s when we learn that an organ was bought and that there was an organist and a choir. This page covers the changes and developments in church music and how it is delivered.

Until 2016 November

Follow the links below to find out what happened from when records began up until November 2016 when Revd Derek Winterburn became the tenth vicar of St James's.

From 2016 November

The parish communion services and special services continued to be accompanied by the organ with the choir singing once or twice a month. All Age services continued to be accompanied by the small church music ensemble, the St James's Players.

Bernie Whitmill started major work to restore and improve the church’s organ in January 2017. Have a look at the photo album which includes pictures of the inside of the organ chamber.

The new ‘Together at Eleven' service, created to meet especially the needs of families, was accompanied by modern music through the sound system, often with illustrations on the big screen.
