Services at St. James's

Sunday service
At St. James's there are regular Sunday services and also many other services, some of which take place regularly every week or every month and some just occasionally - see the main site page Services for details. They are all entered into our on-line church Calendar/Diary.

The most important service has several names: Holy Communion, meaning fellowship and sharing, the Lord's Supper, meaning a meal given by Jesus himself and the Eucharist, meaning thanksgiving. It remembers the Last Supper that Jesus and his disciples shared and we remember this when we share the bread and wine. It particularly celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Normally you have to have been confirmed by a bishop before receiving communion. If you are too young to take communion and if you are older but haven't been confirmed you are invited to have a blessing at the altar. Have a look at what we use during Holy Communion on the page Church Plate.

You will be given a booklet which will help you to share fully in the service - there is a special one for younger people with explanations of what is going on during the service. We stand to sing hymns, to say the Creed and to hear the reading of the Gospel. We sit during readings from the bible, the sermon, and the choir anthems. We sit or kneel for the prayers.

Parish Communion is held on every Sunday except when there is an All-age service on the first Sunday of the month. Both types of services are held at held at 09.30 and are followed by coffee/tea in the church hall.

The All-age Service is especially aimed at family groups and younger members of our congregation and includes a uniformed parade of Guides, Brownies, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. The St. James' Players orchestra accompanies the hymns and songs, plays music during the communion and at the end of the service. The Jays Sunday School and the uniformed groups often play an active part in this service.
