Our Worship
Services
At St. James' Church, we celebrate two services every Sunday, Holy Communion at 8.00 and Parish Communion or an All Age Service at 9.30.

Parish Communion

Our most important celebration has many names: Holy Communion, Mass, The Last Supper, The Lord's Supper and The Eucharist. It celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus. Jesus knew that he was going to be arrested and be put to death soon. So he ate a last meal with his twelve disciples. During the meal, Jesus told his disciples that one of them would betray him and he knew it was Judas. He told them to share the bread and wine, saying 'This is my body' and then 'This is my blood'.

The Last Supper
We remember Jesus' last supper when we share bread and wine at the service of Holy Communion and we believe that Jesus is with us. The priest blesses the bread and wine and gives each person a piece of bread, which is often a wafer, and a sip of wine from a special communion cup called a chalice. Often children who are too young to take part are invited to have a blessing at the altar.

All Age Service

On the first Sunday of every month, we worship in a slightly different way. We have an All Age Service. This service is especially aimed at family groups and younger members of our congregation and includes a uniformed parade of Guides, Brownies, Venture Scouts, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. The St. James's Players plays for the hymns and songs. There is generally a theme involving activities for the younger members (and the not so young!).
Going to Church

All Age Service
One month the theme of the Informal All Age Service was Sight and Vision. As part of our worship we responded to a request from ALMA (the link with our partner Church in Mozambique and Angola) to gather used and unwanted spectacles. Several baskets were filled during the service and the spectacles were sent off to be adjusted for those in need of them.
