SUNDAY SCHOOL

The Jays Sunday School
The Jays Sunday School is a lively, caring group for children aged from 5 upwards, with three committed teachers. Why are we called 'The Jays'? The name was created many years ago and simply means 'J' for St James and 'J' for Jesus.

Some of the things we do can be seen on our page Activities.

We meet most Sunday mornings. The exceptions are the first Sunday of each month, when there is an All Age Service which is more suitable for us to attend all the way through, and the three main school holidays (we do meet during half term holidays).

Sunday School starts at 9.30 in the church itself where we sit together and join in the first hymn with the rest of the congregation.

During the last verse of the first hymn one of the group goes up to the altar to collect a cross from the altar. We take this into the hall for our usual Sunday School meeting.

Listening to a story
The collection we have every Sunday is in aid of The Children's Society. At the end of the meeting, we return to church and one of the chlidren returns the cross to the altar. We join with the rest of the congregation in receiving a Blessing or Communion and singing the last hymn. This way we are included in the church service itself and feel part of it even though we spend most of the time in the hall.

We sometimes act as sidespersons, read lessons, say prayers, help with Parish Breakfast and so on during the Services on the first Sunday of each month. We also sometimes put on activities in church for Mothering Sunday, Easter, Harvest or Christmas.

The teachers use a variety of materials which includes booklets for us to take home when finished or at the end of term. They follow the Christian Calendar so that we can see that we are an extension of the church and congregation, not a separate group. See the 2007 Intercessions (Prayers) and Our Jesse Tree on our Advent page. On Remembrance Sunday we learnt why this day is so important and wrote our own prayers which can be seen on our Remembrance Sunday page. See the work we did for Harvest Festival.
