St. James’s day is on July 25th, but we celebrate this day
a few weeks earlier before many people go away on holiday. St. James’s
day is our Patronal Festival celebrating our patron saint, St
James. Patron saints are saints who were chosen as special
protectors or guardians over certain things like occupations,
illnesses, churches, countries, causes, in fact, anything that
is important to us.
St. James's Day is celebrated with an All-age
service at 11am, sometimes with a guest preacher. St.
James's Players accompany the hymns and play other music during
the service. The uniformed groups (Guides,
Brownies, Scout
Group) join the service and participate by carrying their
flags in a colourful parade through the church and, with the Sunday
School, often act as sidespersons,
read lessons, say prayers, sing, act a play or assist with Parish
Breakfast.
The service is rather later than usual because immediately after
the service, there is a family shared lunch
in the vicarage garden. Sometimes there has been a picnic in the
park instead. Various activities take place after the shared lunch,
such as bell-ringing in the tower, badge-making and other activities
for the children. There have been Parish Treasure Hunts, and 'Beating
the Bounds' where parishoners (of all ages) take to their bikes
(of all types) and ride around the boundary of the Parish of St
James.
