Rites of Passage

St. James
" "
We all travel through life but we do not travel alone. We walk our way through life with other human beings and of course, God is with us every step of the way. We can travel through life as members of the Church.

At key points in our life we come to major events or milestones - significant important events that may be marked by a party, a ceremony, or a particular service in church. These important events are known as ‘rites of passage’. ‘Passage’ suggests movement and journey and a ‘rite’ is a ritual or ceremony that helps us to make that movement and go on that journey.

We celebrate the birth of a child, deciding to be a Christian for ourselves, getting married and even death. These are considered to be sacraments. When people call something a sacrament, they mean that it is something ordinary in itself, but which also has a special sacred or holy meaning.

See above for some key ‘rites of passage’ for the Christian Church and part of what St. James's Church has offered since 1863 and continues to offer.
