Rites of Passage - Marriage

Marriage
St. James's Church welcomes couples who wish to discuss getting married or having a marriage blessing in our church. The couple are not on their own. Besides meeting individually with the vicar, couples will be invited to meet together to share common experiences and learn from one another. Our beautiful building and facilities will make your special day particularly memorable. Please contact the Vicar to discuss marriage at St. James's.

Unlike baptism, marriage is not for everyone though here the Church is again present on the journey, this time with a couple seeking love, support and prayer as they commit themselves to one another. A wedding is a great moment in life – joyous, but also solemn as two people pledge to be with one another until the end of their lives. A wedding is a very public occasion. A wedding dress of whatever style makes a bride rather obvious! In a wedding service there is a ritual of separation as bride and groom enter with their supporters, but are left alone with the minister to make their vows. They then leave the church together having journeyed together from being two single people to being a married couple. At St. James's the couple walk the length of the church at the end of the service – their journey continues as they head out through their families and friends and out the door, into the world. Briefly they have separated from that world, and now return to it in a new way. Just as in baptism we have the visible sign of water with spoken words so in marriage we have the visible sign of joined hands with spoken words. A ring or rings worn on a particular finger is further physical evidence of a new life that has begun.

Floral Displays

Floral Displays for Weddings
Flowers at St James's are entirely funded by contributions from the congregation; we have a rota system of volunteers who make the floral displays. During Lent (the period before Easter) and Advent (the period before Christmas) there are no flowers in the church. It is possible that there may not always be displays every week during the rest of the year.
Wedding displays can be arranged by either the church "Wedding Team" or by the Wedding party. It is advisable to make contact and discuss your requests about 6-8 weeks before the Wedding.
If flowers are required it is suggested that a contribution of £60 - £70 be made for each large arrangement, and flowers will be purchased as near as possible to those requested.

Additional foliage will be cut and "conditioned" by church members and there will be a cover charge of £5 per arrangement for other materials used. A donation of £120 - £150 would usually provide flowers for two large displays.
Florists are welcome to bring displays to the church but need to liaise with either the Vicar or Church Flower Organiser to arrange a suitable time for delivery.

Additional wedding flowers such as pew ends, may be able to be provided by private arrangement with the flower organisers

Music

Please contact the organist, Matthew O'Malley, directly to discuss and confirm your choices of music for the ceremony no later than four weeks before your wedding:
home: 01483 304010; mobile: 07949 442768

Below are lists of suggested music which it is possible for the organist (and choir) to perform. If you wish to select music which is not on this list, please speak to the organist immediately. If you have no preferences, the organist will be happy to select music best suited to the organ (and choir) of St. James’s Church.

Performances of most of the music listed can be heard (either in full or in 30 second samples) online at sites such as Youtube or the itunes store. (For the best results, type both the composer's name and the title of the piece into the search engine).

Wedding Music

Organ Music
Music originally written for orchestra is not an uncommon choice, however it is worth noting that this does not sound the same when played on the organ. It is often less effective than a piece written specifically for the organ, and can sound heavy without the colours of the orchestra.

As a consequence, if you wish to hear music played on the organ, I would strongly recommend choosing organ, rather than orchestral music.

The Church Choir
For an additional fee (see below) the church choir will sing at your ceremony. The church choir is a voluntary choir and, as such, is available on Saturdays only and when a sufficient number of choir members can attend. The organist will confirm two weeks in advance whether the church choir is available. If not, you will be refunded their fee in full. The role of the choir is to support the congregation during the singing of the hymns and, if you wish, to sing a piece of choral music during the signing of the register.

Soloists and Instrumentalists
For an additional fee (please contact the organist) the organist can engage professional soloists, both singers and instrumentalists, or a small vocal ensemble to perform at your ceremony. Like the choir, the principal role of these musicians would be to perform during the signing of the register, but performances at other points during the service would also be possible (for example in place of hymns).

Be thou my vision

Dear Lord and Father of mankind
Father I place into your hands
Guide me o Thou Great Redeemer
I danced in the morning (Lord of the dance)
Immortal, invisible
I vow to thee my country
Lead us heavenly Father lead us
