Harvest Festivals
are a way of saying 'thank you' to God for the harvest - they have been
taking place all over the world for hundreds of years. In England, we
have given thanks for harvests since pagan times by singing, praying
and decorating our churches with flowers and food. As harvest services
are not part of the traditional church year they may take place any
time in the autumn. |
St. James's Church is always beautifully
decorated with flowers and sometimes a large loaf in the shape of a
wheatsheaf. Usually people bring gifts of tinned and dried goods and
also harvest produce. These are later given to people in need, either
locally, or perhaps in other countries. We do this because Harvest Festival
reminds us of all the good things God gives us and this makes us want
to share with others who are not so fortunate. Below are pictures taken
when the Church was decorated for the Harvest Festival and of the many
gifts of food and money given by the congregation to give to refugees,
asylum seekers and others who are not as fortunate as us. |

At St. James's, Harvest Festival
is generally celebrated on the first Sunday in October with an All Age
Communion. St. James's Players accompany
the hymns and play other music during the service. The uniformed groups
(Guides, Brownies,
Scout Group) join the service and
participate by carrying their flags in a colourful parade through the
church and, with the Sunday School,
often act as sidespersons, read lessons,
say prayers, sing, act a play or assist with Parish
Breakfast. |

The Christian tradition of giving
at harvest-time goes right back to Biblical times. The Jews gave a tenth
of their harvest to God. This was known as a tythe or tithe. And in
this country farmers had to give a tithe of everything that came from
the ground. Tithes were payments in kind (crops, wool, milk etc.) which
were an agreed proportion of the yearly profits of cultivation or farming.
They were given by parishioners for the support of their parish church
and its clergy. Grain was stored in huge tithe barns, some of which
can still be seen today. This law was scrapped by the Tithe Act in 1936.
However, many Christians still choose to give some of their income to
the church throughout the year - for some, a tenth of the money they
earn. At harvest-time, giving food reminds us that God has provided for
our needs throughout another year. |

| Work by the Jays Sunday School done for Harvest Festival |
Intercessions
written and read by the Jays We pray for the environment; for the future of God’s creation - our planet. We ask that everyone thinks of the part they can play in helping to reduce global warming. Let us all understand that every act or effort we make will altogether make a difference to the future of our planet. For example, recyling, switching off lights, using less water, walking to school. Emma-Lee We pray for endangered plants and species. Species like the polar bear in the Arctic, which is melting even as we pray. We pray for knowledge and understanding of the role that we as a species play in global warming; and that awareness of these facts will motivate us to make amends in the future. We pray that we can play our part in making the world a safer and healthier place for the wellbeing of our children to come, and future generations. Alice C-B We pray for all those in the world who are suffering, including Asia, Africa. We pray for an end to their suffering. We hope that the people of the world will be able to unite some day in order to share the resources of our planet more effectively, so that there is less wastage of energy and food - and that those who are hungry can at last be fed. We pray that the world learns to share. Laura We pray for our Queen, and for Gordon Brown. We pray that Gordon will focus strongly on environmental issues for our planet. We pray for Prince Charles to continue his good works in the area of environmental issues, and that he continues his work with young people to raise their self- esteem and to promote young businesses to think green. Katy We pray for our local community and the people who live here. Particularly for Bill Jerman and his family at this difficult time. We thank God for our community, and that we live in a relatively safe place where the community spirit is strong. We thank God for our good fortune in being able to benefit from all it offers to bring us together. Sunday school, guides, brownies, scouts, beavers, children’s choir, orchestra, and many other activities that we all enjoy. Stella We pray for our local council, which has been proactive in providing us with recycling points and recycling on our doorstep. We pray that they continue in their efforts to raise people’s awareness of Green issues and in making recycling easy for us all to manage. We hope that people understand that their actions on and everyday basis do count. For example thinking about whether to walk or drive; recycle the cardboard or just throw it in the bin; keep the tap running during teeth brushing or just when you brush your teeth; taking a bath or a shower, and so on. We pray that everyone understands that every effort they can make, no matter how small, will make a difference. Alice Calder We pray for the world and hope we get many opportunities to make it a peaceful place. We pray that gun crime will be stopped. We pray for those who have suffered or died unnecessarily - especially for our soldiers in Iraq. We pray that people will start to have faith in each other - and that the wars and fighting will stop. Isobel We pray for all those who are sick, and those who are in hospital. We pray for their families who support them and give them comfort. We pray also for those who have recently died and those who grieve for them. Olivia |
Learning about
Harvest Below are pictures taken of the work the children did at a Harvest Workshop. Here they learned about Autumn, the harvest and about other countries and places where, unlike us, people do not have enough food. |
