Parish Communion: The Gathering

WHAT HAPPENS
WHAT THIS MEANS
WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE

A hymn may be sung
While this hymn is being sung, the priest and servers, and the choir when they are singing, move down the south aisle and through the body of the congregation to the front of the church. This movement helps to gather us all together – leading us to focus our attention on worshipping God.
The entry

The Greeting
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
All Amen.

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
All and also with you.
(or)
  The Lord be with you.
All and also with you.

The president may say words of welcome and introduction
The priest welcomes the congregation.
The greeting

Prayer of Preparation
All Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Preparation means ‘getting ready’. So here we ask God to help us worship him.
The congregation praying

Prayer of Penitence
The president introduces the Prayers

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.
(or)
All Most merciful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word and deed.
We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us to amend what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with you, our God.
Amen.

Or, with suitable penitential sentences the Kyrie Eleison may be used

  Lord, have mercy.
All Lord, have mercy.
  Christ, have mercy.
All Christ, have mercy.
  Lord, have mercy.
All Lord, have mercy.
Being penitent means ‘being sorry’, so we now think about the wrong things we have done, said and thought. We say sorry and ask God to forgive us.
The congregation praying
The president declares God’s forgiveness
The priest tells us that God does forgive us.
The president gives us absolution

Gloria in Excelsis
The Gloria in Excelsis may be used
All Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father:
receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
We sing a song of praise to God.

Normally the organist accompanies this and all the other sung parts of the service. The organist also plays before and after the service and during communion.

The Collect
The president introduces the Collect, the prayer of the day, which is printed on the weekly sheet by saying ‘Let us pray.’

The Collect is said, and all respond

All Amen
The Collect is a special prayer for this particular Sunday. There is a different one for every Sunday of the Christian year.
