| Richmond Welcare, at 26 The Green, Twickenham, supports parents and their children with many individual cases being addressed. Parents often approach Welcare independently, with others being referred by social services or the health visitor. Welcare can offer them practical advice and help in relation to their housing and financial situation, support with their complex and often difficult family and opportunities to meet and socialise with other parents thus reducing their isolation and loneliness.
They run a weekly drop-in centre for parents having difficulties with their children. They can meet others in similar situations for support and advice. The emphasis is always on trying to help and encourage parents to be as self-sufficient and independent as possible. They also run a Domestic Violence Group and regular Parenting Classes for all.
During the year they organise a summer outing and a Christmas party for their clients and their children. These are supported by generous donations from Churches at Christmas and funds raised at The Twickenham Green Fair.
Richmond Welcare is staffed by volunteers and has links with social workers and outside agencies. It is supported financially by Social Services and local churches, including St. James's. One-off payments are made in times of need, for example to provide clothing for the children or items of furniture. The money from the churches particularly provides toys, parties and outings for the children.

'I have been attending the drop-in regularly. I had recently moved to the borough and had few friends and no family nearby, so I enjoyed coming to the Thursday morning drop-ins and meeting other mothers. There is always a warm welcome and I have received a lot of support and help with housing and welfare problems. I do not have a social worker so I needed to come to Welcare for help and advice. I also attended a parenting course which I found very useful.' |
