St. James's Ark is a playgroup for carers and under fives which is Christian based and non-educational. It takes place in church on Monday mornings during term time from 10.15 – 12.15. There is a large regular clientele, some occasional visitors and new people are always welcome. £2 per family is charged with about twenty five children usually attending per week. A maximum of thirty families can be accomodated.

There are two separate play areas, for babies and toddlers, with lots of toys and equipment, much of it donated. There is access to the toilets in the church hall.

There is a wide variety of art and craft activities, some of which are on display in the north aisle of the church. Towards the end of the morning, the children can take part in singing and action rhymes and listen to a story. Refreshments for both adults and children are available at no extra cost throughout the morning with Fairtrade goods being used.

A short service is held once or twice a term and there are parties at Christmas and at the group birthday in September. On Mon 26th April 2010, Laura McGregor from St John's Ambulance came to do a session on pre-school first aid.

The group provides a fun morning for the children and a chance for the adults to chat with friends old and new in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. See the St. James's Ark flyer

St. James's Ark celebrated its first birthday in September 2011. This milestone was marked with a short service of thanksgiving with communion, followed by a delicious Ark cake. The second birthday was celebrated after yet another successful year.

Historical Background to St. James's Ark
A Carers and Toddlers group, St. James's Ark, was introduced at St. James’s Church, under the direction of Revd. Debbie Oades, as a result of the 2007 Mission Action Plan. A Mission Action Plan (M.A.P.) is used to focus on priorities for the future, building on the past. It is a plan which seeks to move a church community forward and not simply maintain its current activities, however good they may be. One of the six themes identified in the M.A.P. was 'Outreach' and another was 'Children and Young People'. The theme 'Outreach' is where we aim to develop further contacts with the wider community, at home and abroad. The theme 'Children and Young People' is where we aim to give children and young people every opportunity to become involved in the Christian life by making it more attractive and accessible. Therefore we become
'A church community and local community brought closer to God'.

As a result of the M.A.P. Away Day Revd. Debbie Oades produced a paper about the possibility of setting up a Carers and Toddlers group at St. James’s. She went to St. Mary’s Church, Staines, to observe their group, and various other research was carried out to discover how different churches organised their groups. It was decided that the group would be Christian based and non-educational. It was suggested that September 2009 would be the right time to start and in the meantime the P.C.C. gave the idea their blessing.

Debbie Nunn, Suzanne Brett and Carole Greville-Giddings offered their help with the new group. A name, 'St. James's Ark', was chosen and a logo was designed. Other plans were made, an article was placed in the Spire and flyers were produced to advertise the venture. The helpers had their C.R.B. checks and updated their First Aid cover.
