Rainbow Fund for South Africa

Rainbow Fund for South Africa

This Richmond based charity was set up in 1999 after visitors came face to face with the deprivation suffered by children in the townships of Cape Town. Guguletu is one such township, part of the vast shanty town which visitors to Cape Town pass on their way to and from the airport. Money raised by the fund goes towards salaries for teachers at the Rainbow Homework School in Guguletu, plus a meal for the students before they get down to work. There are about 140 students, with 7 teachers, and some of the students have already gone on to Stellenbosch University.

The Rainbow Fund is a personal charity, knowing the children it helps, as well as their teachers and the other supporters in Guguletu. It also guarantees that every penny raised benefits them directly. All its work in the UK and Cape Town is voluntary and it makes no administration charges. Further information

St. Luke’s Hospital in Milo, Tanzania

Milo, Tanzania

We support St Luke’s Hospital in Milo, southwest Tanzania, through USPG’s Project Scheme.

In addition to regular giving through USPG, St James has held special fundraising appeals. In the 1980s a motorbike was bought for the hospital’s outreach work. £1000 from our Millennium Project was used to build a hostel for visiting relatives. In 2009 parishioners contributed to the course fees of three students who will work at St Luke’s hospital on completion of their courses – two already are.

Alongside all of this has been friendship and letter writing for over 30 years. Our special friend at the hospital was senior clinical officer Benaiah Kilwale, who died in July 2011. Dr Simeon, in the green shirt, will now keep us well informed. Joseph (on his right) is one of the two male nurses. Further information
