What is the web?
The world wide web is the fastest growing part of the internet (a group of computers all over the world that are connected together). It is able to show pictures and text and play sounds and video clips. Most people who talk about the internet really mean the world wide web. Connecting to the web is like visiting the world's biggest library. There are web sites about everything just like there are books about everything. So it is helpful to know what you want to look up before you visit. Special programs called 'search engines' work like librarians by helping you find things. What is e-mail? E-mail stands for electronic mail. It is a way of sending letters you have typed on your computer to other people's computers, providing they are connected to the internet and they have an e-mail address. Lots of people have e-mail addresses. They look like this:- My name@the place who gives me access.co.uk |
