2010-2019: Five Churchyard Trees to be Felled - 2011
December/2012 January

Decaying trees

" "
The churchyard will soon look dramatically different following the news that five mature trees are to felled because of safety fears.

All of the trees are either dead or dying due to decay and are at risk of falling. The extent of the problem came to light when an officer from the London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames, which is responsible for the churchyard, came to inspect a beech tree that has damaged the boundary wall on Park Road.

Following a survey, Paul Cross, the council’s arboricultural officer, highlighted five trees affected by disease and in need of felling. Two beech trees on either side of the war memorial have aggressive root decay caused by fungus, as has the beech tree next to the boundary wall. Also for the chop are a cedar tree with numerous woodpecker holes within its main stem, and a weeping ash.

The essential work will begin shortly, paid for by the council. Look out for updates on the pew sheets and website.

The council will plant two black walnut (Juglans nigra), two tulip trees (Lirodendron tulipifera) and two field maple (Acer campestre) during next year’s planting season (October to March 2013). These are all less susceptible to disease
