Repairing the Organ 1885 May - September

Our Church Organ - 1885 May
Our Easter Day offertories were given to a fund which has now been started for the repair of the organ. The organ itself is a very good instrument, but somewhat old-fashioned in its mechanical structure, and very much out of repair.

A thorough overhauling of the working parts, and in some cases their rearrangement, cannot longer be delayed; and some additions in the shape of new stops would add very much to the effectiveness of the music. To do all would probably require an expenditure of at least £l50, but the more urgent and necessary portion of the work could probably be carried out for £60 or £70. For this, contributions, which may be sent to the Vicar, Churchwardens, or Organist, are asked. It may not be known to some of our readers that this organ originally stood in St. Peter’s Church, Eaton Square, which of late years has been the centre of a great work, principally carried on by Dr. Wilkinson, the present Bishop of Truro.

Our Church Organ - 1885 June
We are glad to be able to report considerable progress towards effecting the much needed repair and improvement of our Church Organ. A meeting, which, considering the unfavourable state of the weather, was well attended, was held at the Vicarage on the evening of Wednesday, May 6th. The proposals of Messrs. Klitz, for the repair and improvement of the Organ, were laid before the meeting, and it was unanimously resolved to undertake the whole of the work at once. A committee, consisting of the Vicar and Churchwardens, Messrs. G. H. Barlow, J. C. Rait, T. Bawling and J. Singleton was appointed to carry out the work. A subscription list was opened and, including the Easter Offertory, £10 15s. l0d., the sum of £123 15s. l0d. was put down. This has been further increased as the subscription list will show. As a sum of nearly £200 will probably be required, subscriptions are earnestly requested from all who take an interest in the services of our Church.

Since the above was written, the Committee, having invited tenders from several other organ builders, have accepted that of Messrs. Bishop & Son, who undertake all the work before specified, and a bourdon stop in addition, for the sum of £195. The, organ is to be ready for use at the Confirmation on July 17th. Collectors are requested to send in their cards before the 12th June.

Our Church Organ - 1885 July
The contract finally agreed to by Messrs. Bishop and Son is for the sum of £210, and this includes several important additions and improvements to the original plan. The work has been rapidly proceeded with, and already (June 20th) one load of the interior works has been returned for re-erection. Our subscription list has also made fair progress, and although we still want a little more to meet the contract price and any incidental expenses which may arise, we have every confidence that the necessary sum will eventually be obtained.

Our Church Organ - 1885 August
The organ was re-opened on the occasion of the Confirmation and, as far as we could judge, the improvement effected by the repair and additions is very marked. The rich soft tone of the Bourdon pipes which form the western front of the organ is very pleasing. We defer further comment till our next magazine.

Our Church Organ - 1885 September
More than a month has now elapsed since the restoration was completed, and we think the work done has given satisfaction to most of those who have heard the organ played. Mr. Higgs, organist of S. James,’ Westminster, tried it a week or two ago, and seemed pleased. Messrs. Bishop & Son will thoroughly overhaul the instrument, and remedy any little defects before they hand it over as entirely finished.
