Easter Vestry - 1885 May

" "
The Vestry for the election of Churchwardens and other parish business was held on Wednesday in Easter Week, and about a dozen of the parishioners were present. Messrs. W. C. B. Hall and A. Storey again accepted office as Vicar’s and People’s Church-wardens.

Their accounts were satisfactory, and showed that although the offertories have not yet risen to the desired average, all necessary expenditure had been met during the past year. However, the amount handed over to the Schools and to the Poor was much reduced, and it is hoped that during the present year the deficiency may be reparied. Messrs. H. P. Bowling, T. Bowling, A. Cutfield, J. Singleton, G. H. Barlow, G. Dowsett, and Capt. Isdell were elected as Sidesmen and Mr. Chandler was again appointed Sexton and Verger.

The Annual Vestry Meeting is the equivalent of the Annual General Meeting of the Parish. Because the parishioners originally met in the church vestry to transact the business of the parish, the word Vestry came to be applied both to the body of parishioners and to the meeting itself. The main business of the Easter Vestry was the election of churchwardens.
