"A very beautiful
stained glass window has just been put in the Church by the family of
the late Mr. Pemberton, formerly of Hampton. The subjects represented
are Zacharias and Elizabeth, the father and mother of S. John the Baptist.
|
| Zacharias holds in his hand a scroll containing
the first words of the "Benedictus," (of which he was the author),
"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel." Beneath the two chief figures
are small groups representing the Meeting of the Virgin Mary and
Elizabeth, and the Presentation of the Infant John the Baptist in
the Temple. Above the two main lights an exquisitely executed Angel
is depicted, announcing the Beatitude, "Blessed are they that hunger
and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled." The whole
is so delicately tinted that it scarcely interferes with the passage
of the light, and it is a most pleasing addition to our Church.
The work has been designed and carried out by Messrs. Shrigley &
Hunt. |
