The Hampton Hill Parish Magazine

"Perhaps it may be well to explain the object of these Entertainments and the principle upon which they are conducted. ln the first place it will be observed that they are altogether selfsupporting, and that the whole cost of a good and plentiful meal is defrayed by the moderate charge of 6d. each to those who attend.

Next, the work to be done is mostly the voluntary labour of willing hands, which are ever ready to work or do a service to a neighbour. But besides this a really good evening’s entertainment is given by the kindness of those who exert their vocal and manual powers in the cause. One great advantage of this sort of Entertainment is that there is no question as to who is to be invited or who left out. It is open to all who like to take a ticket, at least to all who will behave themselves with decorum. There is one difficulty which often perplexes those who have to make the arrangements, viz., to know how many to provide for. If all who intend to come would take their tickets two or three days beforehand this difficulty would be greatly lessened."
