Word
Meaning
Gargoyle
The projecting carved stone waterspout which was often used in church architecture. Its purpose is to throw out the rainwater from the gutter of the church roof, and so to get it clear of the walls of the building itself. The carvings have open mouths out of which the water drains. General Synod (The General Synod of the Church of England) The governing body of the Church of England.
God
There is only one Christian god, the father of mankind, who created heaven and earth and sent his son, Jesus Christ, to save mankind.
Godparents
When a baby is baptised Godparents promise to bring the baby up as a Christian. See the page Baptism.
Good Friday
The day on which Jesus was crucified. Hot cross buns are often eaten on Good Friday, which occurs two days before Easter Day. See the page Good Friday.
Gospel

• The Good News of Christ proclaimed by the church.
• The writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John which are part of the New Testament of the Christian Bible.

Gravestone
A stone that shows where a dead person is buried and which usually has their name and the years of their birth and death written on it. See the page Graves.
