The Induction & Institution of the Revd Peter Vannozzi - 2007 March

The Induction & Institution of the Revd Peter Vannozzi

There was an atmosphere of quiet excitement in the crowded church as we watched the formal procession of servers, choir, clergy, the patron, our new vicar, the archdeacon, wardens, bishop and chaplain enter the church through our new west porch entrance.

In the service, the presentation of the Revd Canon Peter Vanozzi to Bishop Michael by Archdeacon Stephan was followed by Bishop Michael’s sermon.

He reminded us of the story of St Cuthbert, whose feast day we had just celebrated, and its relevance to us all today. Cuthbert, Prior of Lindisfarne in the seventh century, led a life exemplifying the three duties of Christian priests: prayer, teaching and mission.

Lindisfarne itself, the Holy Island, joined to the mainland by a causeway flooded at high tide, gives us a symbol of full Christian life; working with the community as a whole, and yet able to withdraw from it for prayer and meditation. Read the Bishop's sermon

Following the sermon we were all called to affirm our own commitment to ministry, witness and service. The Institution and Induction, the central ceremony of the service, followed. The Institution is the bishop’s gift of spiritual responsibility, “the cure of souls”, to the newly appointed priest. In the Induction, the archdeacon gives the priest responsibility for care of the church and its benefice.

Peter’s tolling of the church bell signified the beginning of his new ministry. Our happy formal Welcome of our new vicar was followed by the peace, and the eucharist.

The moving solemnity of the ceremony was followed by a splendid party in the hall, with refreshments worthy of the occasion. A most memorable evening. Welcome Peter!

The Bishop reads the Deed of Institution and delivers it to the Vicar saying:

Bishop: Receive the cure of souls which is both yours and mine, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Bishop then blesses the new Vicar.

Bishop: The God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in your that which is well pleasing in his sight: and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you always.
Priest: Amen.

The Bishop delivers the Mandate of Induction to the Archdeacon, saying:

Bishop: Having admitted Peter Vannozzi to the Cure of Souls in this Parish, I authorise and ask you, Mr. Archdeacon, to induct him into this church and benefice of St. James, Hampton Hill.

The Archdeacon goes to the door of the church with the Vicar, Area Dean and Churchwardens.
The Archdeacon lays the Vicar's hand on the handle of the door, saying:

Archdeacon: By virtue of this mandate, I induct you, Peter Vannozzi, into the real, actual and corporal possession of the parish church and benefice of St. James, Hampton Hill with all the rights, dignities and appurtenances belonging to it. The Lord preserve your going out and your coming in, from this time forth and evermore.

The Vicar tolls the bell to signify the beginning of his ministry in the parish as incumbent.

The Archdeacon conducts the Vicar to his stall and places him in it, saying:

Archdeacon: By this act, Peter Vannozzi, I install you as priest in the congregation of Christ in this parish.
See that you lead your people in the way of holiness and in faithful service of God our Father, after the pattern of our Saviour Christ.
All: Amen.

The Bishop comes forward, takes the new Vicar by the hand and, both of them facing the people, says:

Bishop: I present to you Peter as your new Vicar. Remember that you share with him in the ministry to which he has been called; for as St. Peter wrote to all Christians: You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people.

Members of the church and local community then greet the new Vicar.
