Missionary Work Society - 1886 November

The Hampton Hill Parish Magazine

"Committee: Hon. Mrs. H. Bligh. Mrs. Powell (Sec.), Miss Bligh. During the last season, this branch of the Ladies’ Association of the S.P.G. held 10 meetings at the Vicarage, and a large parcel of work was sent to the head office.

The following note was received in return: “The parcel sent by you has been seen by the Sub-Committee of Work and Clothing, and much approved by them; the contents will be sent out to Kaffraria immediately.” On the 5th March, Lieut. R. Lowry, gave an address to a large meeting, mentioning many interesting details of the work progressing in the islands where Bishop Patterson lived and died. As the average attendance of members was small last year, it is hoped that members will do their best to attend the meetings during the coming winter. The first work meeting was held on Friday, October 22nd, at 2.45 p.m., and will be continued, as usual, every fortnight. Subscriptions, 4s. per annum, or 4d. per month.; of this sum, 2s. 6d. is handed ever to to the parent society, and ls. 6d. retained for the expense of providing materials. Non-working members, 2s. 6d. It is hoped that Miss Patterson will be able to give an address in December."

Society for the Propagation
"Advent Sunday is our Mission Sunday. The offertories during the day will be devoted to the funds of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. Sermons will be preached both morning and evening by the Rev. H. Laurence, of Geraldton, Western Australia.

Again we would press upon all who enjoy the privileges of Christianity the claim which the heathen have upon us, to make every effort to extend to them the knowledge of salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ, shed for them upon the cross. If we do not help them, who is there else to do so? Shall souls be left perishing in heathen darkness because we will deny ourselves nothing in order to help them? Remember, too, how many heathen countries are under the dominion of Great Britain, and how much of our wealth and comfort we owe to them."
