"Lent is again at hand, and what use shall we make of it? God Almighty has spared us another year, and, alas, how many things during this year past since last Lent, have we done which we ought not to have done, and left undone which we ought to have done? How can we best remedy our shortcomings and faults? |
The return of the season of Lent seems to answer the question. Turn ye (saith the Lord) from all your wickedness, and your sin shall not be your destruction; cast away from you all your ungodliness that ye have done; make you new hearts and a new spirit. This is the message which Lent brings us from God. It invites us to be up and doing, to seize upon the opportunity once more offered, to spend its forty days in humiliation and contrition, self-examination and repentance. Again, this year, special services have been arranged, which may be helpful, it is hoped, towards accomplishing this work of repentance, so needful to us all. You are earnestly asked to take advantage of them and to make a real effort, which may cost some self sacrifice, to attend both on the week-day and on the Sunday."
