Inside the Church - The North and South Aisles

The North Aisle
Two aisles run down the sides of the church with the nave in the middle. The children’s corner is in the north aisle. There are also many chairs which allow different arrangements for services, meetings, group work and so on. The St. James’s Players play for the All-age services in the south aisle. There are also display boards here.

Icon of 'Christ Pantocrator'

At the top of the south aisle is an area associated with personal prayer. There is a board on which prayers can be placed, and next to it a stand to place candles in. They are lit, and remaining burning as a sign of the prayer offered. Next to it is a copy of a 16th century Russian icon. An icon is not a piece of decoration, but rather an aid to prayer and worship in the Orthodox tradition of Christianity. 'Icon' literally means 'image' and it is a depiction of Christ, the saints, or of a biblical or other scene. Our icon is of 'Christ Pantocrator' which means 'Christ almighty.' It is a very common depiction of Christ in an icon. In this icon, Christ is depicted as a teacher. His right hand is raised not in blessing, but rather this is an ancient gesture of an orator. It shows that he is speaking or about to speak. In his left hand Christ holds a book, the Gospels. Christ teaches us at all times.

The North and South Aisles Stained Glass Windows

Stained glass has been used to add beauty and colour to our church. Most of our windows show biblical scenes, and these helped to teach the people about religion in the days when most of them could not read.

The separate pieces of glass each have their own colour and are set into strips of lead. The colours in early stained glass were each thought to have a meaning; for instance, red meant divine love, white - divine wisdom, yellow - faith, and so on.

See our South Aisle Stained Glass Windows images page and our North Aisle Stained Glass Windows images page.
